Here's a question for Trivial Pursuit: what do Bing Crosby and I have in common? Believe me it's not that we're both great singers!
No, the fact is that we've both been involved in advertising campaigns for Shell petrol, both of them in the 1960s. Bing's campaign, as I recall, involved him playing a lot of golf while he motoried around the UK. You'll see from the pictures below that mine took a different theme.
The pictures are taken from a fold-out booklet that was produced as part of the campaign, and features me learning all about the ins and outs of fuel production and performance while wearing a very sixties pair of white boots - we used to call them go-go boots. Ah, go-go boots!
I don't recall if I was allowed to keep the boots after filming, but I remember I definitely didn't get to keep the car!
The really frightening thing is that when the campaign was running, petrol cost three shillings and six (old) pence a gallon. That makes the price just under 20p a litre. When I worked that out I couldn't believe it. I must have made a mistake, surely? Please tell me I've made a mistake!
